Why Fast Shipping is Your Biggest Liability

The old playbook told us that speed is the only thing that matters. Move fast, break things, ship the MVP in a weekend, and iterate based on real-world feedback. But when code is cheap and anyone can build at terminal velocity, shipping fast without sharp deciding becomes your biggest liability. Cheap building without sharp deciding just means shipping the wrong things faster.

We lived this ourselves. In our early days building Beam, we tried to ship a "bricks" system. The idea was simple: let teams create basic product blocks to decide if something was worth building, without the extra machinery of translating it into a full plan. We shipped it fast. We told ourselves we would progress incrementally. But we forgot the extra step of thinking where it would actually lead us. It was a detour that did not solve the real pain.

The bottleneck moved from the hands that build to the mind that decides what's worth building.

The cost of that rushed decision was not just a bad feature. It cost us 3 man-weeks of engineering that we had to throw away completely. We had to scrap the entire system because, once we saw it in reality, we realized we could not just tweak or incrementally build on top of it. It was a dead end. It took us backward and forced us to spend valuable time refocusing our energy.

How do you filter out the fast but wrong ideas?

Before we had a system, my best medium for pressure-testing ideas was writing with a pen and paper. Today, we run every single idea through a Beam thinking session before a single line of code is written. It helps us identify risks, view blind spots, and understand how a feature fits into our larger strategy. We deliberately slowed down our own MVP launch because our internal dogfooding showed we were not yet delivering on our promise. We chose to wait until it was ready to provide real value to our design partners.
